1965 – 1st Edition of HACKTHORN NEWS

This is the first edition of ‘HACKTHORN NEWS’, which will be issued at the beginning of each month, and will contain, it is hoped, all news and announcements of importance for the following month. Perhaps anyone with any news or announcements of local interest, such as club meetings or activities, especially those which depend on village support, would be so kind as to bring them to Mrs. Keeley or Mrs. Wilks for inclusion.
We would like to welcome Mr. & Mrs. Atkins and family, also Flt/Lt. & Mrs. Jamison of ‘Popples’ and Mr. & Mrs. Mathews. We hope they will enjoy living in Hackthorn.

After a quite successful season last year the main effort this winter was to raise funds for more equipment. We had two good Whist Drives last year, and an excellent dance at Welton Village Hall. The dance was a new venture and a good crowd turned up to hear the ‘Klan’ and the ‘Beat Five’ play to them. I would like at this point to thank all of the people who gave up their time to help at the dance, their help was much appreciated by the organizers.
This year we have been extending the wicket by levelling another hollow and sowing it down, with that area we should have a very good wicket,
Practice will soon be starting and all people interested will be welcome, remember even if you do not play your support is valuable to us and I am sure that you will enjoy your afternoon’s sport. New members and their subscriptions are always welcome!

On April 1st. the Drama Club held it’s annual dinner at the ‘Brownlow Arms’. This was more or less to celebrate the end of their ‘season’ and the production of their play which was ‘Old Man’s Castle’. It seems to have been enjoyed by everyone who saw it, and for the first time for many years, was taken to another village, Scothern, where it was also well reviewed
The Drama Club would like to say that they always welcome new members especially prospective actors. The next play will be started in the Autuan and they are hoping to see plenty of new talent then.

The committee would like to announce that there will be a gymkhana again this year on Whit Monday. The proceeds will go into the Village Hall funds. They will be extremely glad of any help that anyone can offer them in preparing for it, and will let us know more details later on.

There will be a quiz or ‘Any Questions’ game held sometime during the month of April. The actual date has not yet been decided, but when it is Notices will be put up in the Co-op and the Post Office. It is hoped to include Fellowship News in this News Sheet in future.
We are pleased to see that the lake is at last a little more near normal.

This has been arranged for Friday, 9th April at 7.00 p.m. at the Vicarage. All On the Church Electoral Roll are cordially invited. At this Meeting we elect the Church Wardens and Sidesmen and pass the Annual Church Accounts. Church plans for the future are made, and opportunity is given for questions on church Matters to be asked and answered. It is hoped to settle at this meeting the date for the cleaning of the church, which takes place every two years. All volunteers will be most welcome. Arrangements will be made about decorating the Church for Easter.
