1st July 1916

HACKTHORN – The new head teacher, Miss Tattershall, commenced her duties at the school on Monday.

Pte G. Moore, 1st Lincolns, now serving in France will receive a pleasant surprise by post, the school children having sent him from their collecting-box two good boxes of cigarettes an a nice letter.

 6th October 1916

“JACK CORNWELL FUND” – We are glad to learn that the children of Hackthorn School have shown their appreciation of the boy hero, John Cornwell, in a practical manner, and that Miss Tattersall is forwarding from them a donation of 4s, to the “Jack Cornwell Fund”

WAR SAVINGS. – Efforts are being made to assist the war savings fund. At a recent meeting Mr. Cracroft was elected chairman, Mr S. Wilson treasurer, Mr. C.W. Teather secretary, and Mrs. Cracroft, Miss Tattersall and Mr. J. Clarke a committee.

19th October 1916

“OUR DAY” was observed on Saturday in this village and Cold Hanworth. The following school children had a busy day selling Red Cross flags :- Mary Ball, Florence Cannon, Kathleen Cabourn, Gladys Taylor, Nellie Graves. £2 23s 6d was realized and has been sent to Lady Cholmeley, Norton Place, by Miss Tattersall for the Red Cross.

11th November 1916

WAR SAVINGS. – The first public meeting in connection with the War SAvings Fund was held in the old school on Thursday evening, when it was decided to extend the scheme to the scholars of the day school, Miss Tattersall, the head teacher, kindly undertaking to collect the deposits.

HACKTHORN – ‘OVERSEAS’ CLUB. – The children attending the day school have contributed 6s. to the Overseas Club Christmas Fund.
